"I dedicate this goal to all of my team-mates, the staff, my family, my friends, the Italians who have followed us," said Italy's Fabio Borini after his winner against the Netherlands.

Fabio Borini was keen not to hog the limelight after scoring Italy's winner against the Netherlands in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship semi-finals. Borini struck with 11 minutes left to send the Azzurrini through to Tuesday's final against Spain in Jerusalem – "I was so elated." Manolo Gabbiadini, meanwhile, praised the character shown by Devis Mangia's side and backed them to hold their own against the defending champions.

Fabio Borini, Italy forward
It was definitely one of my most important goals this season. I also scored an important one when I returned from injury [against Newcastle United FC in April], but this is more significant because it means we are through to face a great team in the final. It is especially important for all the guys who are here. We have come through unnoticed.

I dedicate this goal to all of my team-mates, to the staff, to my family, my friends, to all the Italians who have followed us, because it was a difficult year for me. My agent and my psychologist have also stayed close to me. That is why I was so elated – I had so many people to thank.

[The Netherlands] are a great team but we showed that we are also strong. We came back from a difficult first 45 minutes and consolidated as a team. We improved after that. We proved tonight that anything can happen, even after suffering for 90 minutes.

Manolo Gabbiadini, Italy forward
We showed huge [heart] and character and showed we know how to play football. The coach has prepared us well, but our determination was crucial. Now we are happy, but straight away we have to focus on Tuesday's game against Spain. It's a game, 90 minutes, and the ball is round. They are strong but we are too; with humility, and with our feet on the ground, we will try to win.
