Former senior international striker Viorel Moldovan has taken over as Romania Under-21 coach.
Moldovan, 42 next week, was a member of Romania's 'golden generation' and represented his country at EURO '96, the 1998 FIFA World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000. He scored 25 goals in 70 national-team games and fills the void left by his old team-mate Bogdan Stelea, who recently stepped down to take charge of FC Viitorul Constanţa.
Moldovan played abroad for clubs including Grasshopper Club in Switzerland, Turkish giants Fenerbahçe SK and Coventry City FC in England. As a coach he has been in the dugout with Romanian sides FC Vaslui, FC Brașov, FC Sportul Studențesc and FC Rapid București, where he won promotion back to the top flight last term.
Romania are third in UEFA European U21 Championship qualifying Group 6. They sit two points behind second-placed Montenegro and five adrift of leaders Germany with two fixtures remaining.
