Jong Oranje grateful to Janssen

Netherlands 1-0 Poland
A Tim Janssen goal ensured the Netherlands won their final 2007 UEFA European Under-21 Championship warm-up before the competition begins a week on Sunday.

Full strength
Jong Oranje coach Foppe de Haan had the luxury of his full 23-man squad to choose from for the first time, with all players available after the conclusion of the domestic season. Among them were the AZ Alkmaar goalkeeper Boy Waterman and AFC Ajax forwards Hedwiges Maduro and Ryan Babel. Otman Bakkal went closest for the hosts in the first half with a disallowed goal for offside, while Babel saw a back-heel cleared from the line.

Forward thinking
The attacking impetus increased in the closing stages with substitutes Daniël de Ridder, a key man in the Jong Oranje's 2006 Under-21 triumph, Janssen and Roy Beerens all entering the fray. It was RKC Waalwijk striker Janssen who finally secured the victory, heading in after captain Ron Vlaar's header bounced back off the post following a Haris Medunjanin cross. De Ridder then hit the woodwork in the closing stages but the one goal was enough to ensure the Netherlands' first defeat of Poland in six attempts at this level, after four defeats and a draw.
