Levy looks to new generation

Israel coach Guy Levy has announced a new-look 20-man squad to play the opening Group 9 qualifiers against Luxembourg on 7 September and Moldova four days later.

Levite captain
Levy, whose side won the Valery Lubanovsky tournament in Kiev for the second successive season earlier last month, has turned to a group primarily consisting of U19 graduates for the two matches. Hapoel Kfar Sava FC goalkeeper Ohad Levite, who was an unused substitute in the finals this summer, has been named as team captain, while Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC midfielder Lior Gan and Maccabi Haifa FC defender Shai Maymon are the most experienced players in the squad with 17 and 12 appearances respectively.

Brief appearances
Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC full-back Dani Bondarv and Nitzan Damari of Maccabi Petah-Tikva FC, both of whom made late appearances as substitutes in the 4-0 defeat by Portugal in the Netherlands in June, represent the remaining survivors of the previous squad while the rest consists mostly of players who narrowly missed out on qualification to the U19 finals.
