Dream start
Varela set the visitors on their way to a comprehensive victory with a first-minute goal, which Filipe Oliveira and Paulo Sérgio had added to by half-time. It was more of the same after the restart, as Castro and Oliveira struck two goals in a six-minute spell midway through the half. And although Philippe Durrer restored some pride with his 83rd-minute effort, Portugal replied instantly with a sixth goal from Manuel Fernandes.
Perfect record
As well as maintaining Portugal's 100 per cent record, the result also kept them three points clear of nearest challengers Russia. Luxembourg remain bottom of the section with one point from five games.
