Iniesta sets Spain soaring

Spain 2-0 Serbia and Montenegro Two goals from Andrés Iniesta saw Spain surge into the play-off positions in Group 7.

Early dominance
Iñaki Sáez's side took control early in the match at the Deleite Municipal stadium in Aranjuez, mounting a series of assaults on Vladimir Stojkovic's goal but the Serbia and Montenegro keeper was in excellent form, flinging himself to keep out Gabi Fernández's long-range shot on eight minutes.

Lazovic denied
Meanwhile, the visitors threatened at the other end with Aleksandar Trisovic sending a bicycle-kick high over the bar before Danko Lazovic was foiled in his attempt to nutmeg Spain keeper Miguel Moyá. However, a red card was to change the course of the game for Serbia and Montenegro.

Red card
Dragan Todorovic was sent off for a late challenge on Iniesta on 34 minutes but Spain could not make their numerical advantage count until the 65th minute when Nenad Milijaš brought down Iniesta in the area. The FC Barcelona player converted the penalty to put Spain ahead.

Iniesta's second
Iniesta added a second on 79 minutes, drilling low inside the post from outside the area to put the match beyond Serbia and Montenegro. The win lifted Spain above their opponents into the top two in the group, and they can now entertain serious hopes of a play-off place.
