Hungary's hopes still high

Hungary 1-0 Bulgaria József Magasfoldi scored the goal that moved Hungary into a promising Group 8 position.

By Martón Dinnyes

József Magasfoldi scored the goal that moved Hungary level on points with second-placed Sweden in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 8.

Second-half winner
Hungary welcomed a Bulgaria side who only four days earlier lost at home to the Swedes. And Bulgaria's hopes of improving on fifth place were ended early in the second half by Magasfoldi, who pounced on the rebound after Krisztian Vadocz's strong shot hit the post to giver dominant Hungary a deserved win.

Roth delighted
Hungary coach Antal Roth said: "It's a great gift for the Hungarian fans after the Easter celebrations because we won against a team that I think are as good as us. It is always great in a team's life when they can prevail against sides of a similar standard. This result will be crucial later on."

Iceland trip
Iceland is Hungary's next destination on 3 June, when Bulgaria face a severe test at home to leaders Croatia, six points clear thanks to five wins from five games.
