Hungary profit from Swedish slip

Hungary 2-2 Croatia A draw against the Group 8 winners was enough to earn the home side a place in the play-offs thanks to a Swedish defeat.

Hungary are through to the play-offs despite dropping two points in their 2-2 UEFA European Under-21 Championship Group 8 game against Croatia.

Tense situation
A point would not have been enough for the home side to go through had rivals Sweden not fallen to a shock 4-1 home defeat against Iceland in their final game. As it is, goals from Tamás Vasko and Tibor Tisza were enough to spark celebrations after the match in Kaspovar.

Tadić opener
Croatia dominated the first half but had only a Josip Tadić goal to show for their efforts at the break. Tadić had earlier volleyed wide from barely three metres but atoned fot his error after 37 minutes when he converted Mladen Bartulović's corner at the far post. However, Croatian celebrations were to be short-lived as Vaskó scored Hungary's equaliser after Croatia had failed to clear Béla Balogh's cross.

Celebrations begin
Hungary redoubled their efforts in the second half and were rewarded after 63 minutes when József Magasfoldi broke clear and was hauled down by Croatian goalkeeper Velimir Radman. Radman got up to save Tisza's penalty but the Hungarian forward successfully converted the rebound. Croatia hit back through subtitute Karlo Primorać but news from Sweden had filtered through and Hungary held on. Croatia will progress to Thursday's play-off draw as Group 8 winners.
