Pivotal moment
The night looked to be going Iceland's way when a rare sortie into Slovakia territory resulted in Birkir Bjarnason's shot being parried into the path of Gylfi Thór Sigurdsson, who pounced to make it 1-0 midway through the first half. The visitors were soon back on the offensive, however, and when defender Eggert Gunnthór Jónsson was sent off for handling on his goalline just before the interval, the pendulum swung in their direction. Miroslav Stoch stepped up and converted from the spot, but try as they might, Slovakia could not find another way through despite laying siege to the Iceland goal in the second period.
