Turkey win augurs well for Ümit

Turkey 2-0 Ukraine Nuri Şahin and Mevlüt Erdinç did the damage in Turkey's first official match under former Galatasaray SK midfielder Ümit Davala.

Turkey maintained their 100 per cent record in their 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship campaign with a 2-0 win against Ukraine today at the Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium.

Ümit debut
Turkey's first official match under former Galatasaray SK midfielder Ümit Davala started with the two sides looking well matched, although Turkey pressed hard and almost took the lead as Nuri Şahin passed up a 38th-minute chance. The home side showed more composure going forward after the interval and Nuri Şahin put them ahead with a powerful shot from distance after 62 minutes. Three minutes later, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard's Mevlüt Erdinç doubled their lead, cutting in from the left, beating one man and putting the ball through the goalkeeper's legs to score. Turkey are now firmly on top in Group 2, with victory leaving them three poinst clear of Ukraine.
