Russia stunned by fantastic Faroes

Faroe Islands 1-0 Russia
The hosts created a huge shock after Jáan Símun Edmundsson's first-minute goal was enough to defeat Russia in 2011 UEFA European U21 qualifying.

The Faroe Islands created a major shock by beating Russia 1-0 in their 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Group 1 qualifier in Torshavn.

Shock result
Jóan Símun Edmundsson's first-minute goal was enough for the hosts to record a famous victory against their illustrious opponents. It was only the Faroe Islands' second win at this level following a success by the same scoreline over Azerbaijan in October 2007.

Early action
Even before the Faroes' goal, Russia had a great chance to take the lead, but Aleksandr Prudnikov shot just wide when well placed in the opposition penalty area after just 18 seconds. However, before a minute had elapsed, the home team were in front when Jóhan Ellingsgaard got to the byline and put in an inviting cross which Edmundsson headed into the top corner. Russia came forward and enjoyed their best spell just after half-time but Faroes' goalkeeper Jóan Pauli Jakobsen made two outstanding saves to keep them at bay.

Russia stunned
The ball just would not go in for Russia who hit the bar before Jakobsen denied them a point in the closing stages with another fine stop. "We are shocked," said Russia coach Igor Kolyvanov. "Prudnikov had a great chance but missed and they scored straight away. After that we were on the attack the entire game but it wasn't our day. I don't think my players underestimated them – we just needed to score goals and weren't able to."
