Substitute Alexander Grünwald scored deep into added time after Georg Margreitter had equalised with a 90th-minute penalty to give ten-man Austria a dramatic 2-1 victory over Azerbaijan in 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 10.
Azerbaijan had taken a first-half lead when Bakhtiyar Soltanov struck in the 34th minute and, after Stefan Ilsanker was sent off prior to the break, they looked set to pick up their first points in the section. However, the hosts' goalkeeper Osman Umarov was dismissed with three minutes of normal time remaining before Margreitter and Grünwald struck in quick succession.
The visitors threatened first when Margreitter hit the post with a header on the half-hour mark, but it was Azerbaijan who broke the deadlock as Soltanov was picked out by Javid Imamverdiyev. Ilsanker was then sent off after receiving two bookings inside five minutes, but the numbers were evened up when Umarov also saw red. Austria then took full advantage through Margreitter and Grünwald. The win moves Andreas Herzog's side to the head of the table with nine points from four matches, the same tally as Scotland, while Azerbaijan remain bottom.
