A central defender who spent the 2011/12 season on loan to Hamburger SV from parent club Chelsea FC, Jeffrey Bruma has been fast-tracked into the Dutch senior national team following spells with the Under-19 and U21 sides. He appeared in two UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers.
• Born in Rotterdam, he left Feyenoord at the age of 15 to join Chelsea and became a regular for the London club's youth and reserve teams.
• Made his Premier League debut for Chelsea aged 17 in October 2009 − as a substitute in a 5-0 win against Blackburn Rovers FC − and helped the club win the FA Youth Cup for the first time in 39 years.
• Spent several weeks in the spring of 2011 on loan to Leicester City FC, then coached by ex-England manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, and scored two spectacular long-range goals in a game against Watford FC while deployed in midfield.
• Agreed to spend the whole of 2011/12 on loan at Hamburg and made a positive start, scoring important Bundesliga goals away to VfB Stuttgart (2-1) and Hannover 96 (1-1).
• First capped in an August 2010 friendly against Ukraine in Donetsk (1-1), he started both of the Netherlands' final two UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers, replacing John Heitinga in central defence.
