• A defensive midfielder who can also fill in at the back, Moritz played regional league football with Alemannia before joining Schalke in 2009.

• Embedded himself immediately in the Schalke side, making his debut on the opening day of 2009/10 against 1. FC Nürnberg and scoring his first Bundesliga goal a week later on his home debut against VfL Bochum 1848 (3-0).

• Ended 2009/10 with 28 appearances (including 18 starts) as Schalke finished runners-up to FC Bayern München.

• Made his UEFA Champions League debut in the opening game of the 2010/11 group stage – a 1-0 defeat against Olympique Lyonnais.

• Although selected to represent Germany at the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt, he was not granted release by his club to participate.
