Romania too strong for plucky Faroes

Romania 3-1 Faroe Islands
Sørmund Kalsø's own goal set the home side on their way to a comfortable win which keeps them in the hunt for second in Group 6.

Romania kept up the pace in the race for second spot in UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying Group 6 with a comfortable win against the Faroe Islands.

Visiting goalkeeper Kristian Joensen had done well to save an Alexandru Cretu header early on, but was beaten on 18 minutes as Sørmund Kalsø directed Cretu's powerfully struck cross into his own net. Martin Madalin doubled the home side's advantage on the counter on 56 minutes, only for the visitors to level two minutes later, Gunnar Zachariasen on target from the spot after Deian Boldor handled in the box.

However, Romania's grip on the game never really loosened, despite the passion of the Faroese players, and Cristian Gavra – who had passed up a chance in a one-on-one in the first half – made it 3-1 on 66 minutes after a fine piece of individual endeavour. René Joensen might have made the ending a bit more exciting, yet missed the target when well placed three minutes later.
