Three-time European champions 1. FFC Frankfurt have parted company with coach Sven Kahlert after a disappointing start to the season.

Last season's UEFA Women's Champions League runners-up are hoping to return to the competition next season after missing out on a two-top Frauen Bundesliga finish last term. However, after starting 2012/13 with a narrow 2-1 defeat of FF USV Jena they lost 3-1 at SGS Essen on Sunday, prompting Kahlert's departure. Former assistant Philipp Dahm, 33, is in caretaker change with Kai Rennich remaining part of the coaching team.

"Following a very inconsistent 2011/12 season and the extremely unsatisfying start to the new season, and given the clear goals this season, those in charge at FFC have decided to part company with head coach Sven Kahlert," said general manager Siegfried Dietrich.

"With this immediate solution, which, in our view, was made necessary at such an early point this season, we want to clearly point the way and at the same time appeal to the team to underline our ambitions with fresh vigour and 100% commitment in the coming games. Dahm and Rennich know the team very well, have the needed know-how and are well respected within the team."

Kahlert had succeeded Günter Wegmann in September 2009 and led the side to a German cup final win against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam in 2011. Last season they made the UEFA Women's Champions League final but lost 2-0 to Olympique Lyonnais at Munich's Olympiastadion.
