Woman referee first in UEFA Cup

Switzerland's Nicole Petignat will take charge of the UEFA Cup match between AIK Solna and Fylkir.

Special assignment
Switzerland's Nicole Petignat has been chosen by the UEFA Referees' Committee to take charge of the UEFA Cup qualifying round first-leg match between AIK Solna of Sweden and Icelandic side Fylkir on 14 August.

Swiss regular 
Petignat, who comes from the Jura region of western Switzerland, has been refereeing men's games in the top Swiss divisions for four years. The 36-year-old has already reached the refereeing summit in women's football, having taken charge of the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup final between the United States and China in Los Angeles, which the USA won 5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw in front of 90,000 spectators. She joined the FIFA international list in 1996.

Women's experience 
She has also been appointed on numerous occasions to officiate at matches in UEFA's major women's competitions, the UEFA European Women's Championship and UEFA Women's Cup, including the semi-final second leg in this year's Women's Cup competition between Germany's 1. FFC Frankfurt and Umeå IK of Sweden.
