Perfect Arsenal joined by Everton

UEFA Women's Cup winners Arsenal LFC completed a perfect English league season this weekend - and will be joined in Europe next term by Everton LFC.

UEFA Women's Cup winners Arsenal LFC completed a perfect league season this weekend - and will be joined in Europe next term by Everton LFC.

Superb achievement
No team had previously negotiated an FA Women's Premier League season without dropping a point since it began in 1991/92 but Arsenal, who beat Umeå IK 1-0 on aggregate last month to take their first continental title, overcame Leeds United LFC 6-0 on Sunday to end their domestic campaign with 22 wins from 22 games. Kelly Smith scored four times and Lianne Sanderson was also on target to finish the season with a tally of 40 goals.

Clean sweep
Champions for the fourth season in a row and eighth time overall, Arsenal scored 119 goals and conceded just ten in the league, and along with their European and English titles also won the FA Women's Cup, FA Women's Premier League Cup and FA Women's Community Shield. Manager Vic Akers said: "Whatever we do in the future, no one can take this away from us. It has been tough, and the last few weeks have been really hard going. But there is such character in this team and I'm really delighted for them. This is as good as it gets and hopefully our success will improve the game in this country."

Everton chance
Everton may have finished 14 points behind Arsenal but their 4-0 win against Chelsea LFC was enough to secure second place and a UEFA Women's Cup debut as the Gunners take an automatic European berth as holders. Michelle Evans, Kelly McDougall, Jody Handley and Becky Easton scored the goals to ensure Everton, managed by Mo Marley - who will coach England in the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship in July - ended two points ahead of Charlton Athletic WFC despite their 2-0 victory at Bristol Academy WFC.
