Potsdam happy, Neulengbach thrilled

German contenders 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and FCR 2001 Duisburg eased into the UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday and there was satisfaction about their respective successes against Finland's Åland United and Kazakhstan's CSHVSM, two sides making their European debuts.

Holders Potsdam now play Austrian club SV Neulengbach on 3/4 and 10/11 November after Neulengbach's Nina Burger scored an "unbelievable" hat-trick to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against PAOK FC. The 2009 champions Duisburg have the tough challenge of former runners-up Fortuna Hjørring, 14-1 aggregate victors against recent semi-finalists CF Bardolino Verona after a 6-1 win in Italy. Åland were not as bad as the result suggests. We played in front of an impressive crowd considering the early kick-off time. In some ways it went very well today, but we made a lot of bad passes which we don't in the Bundesliga.

The two quick goals gave us a lot of security, but we did not take all our chances. We have taken a step forward after a slow start to the season.

We lost by a big score again but we defended well in the second half. We played better than in the first leg and the first half today. I'm not happy with our attacking, but my players ran a lot and made a game of it after two early goals.

It was important we scored very early, so the pressure was off and we played really well in the first half. We showed PAOK we wanted to win, and they had no chance at all in the first half. After the break we missed a penalty and then there was chaos in the match. A lot of yellow cards, and unfortunately a red card for us, but we controlled the game over the whole 90 minutes so we are very proud to be in the last 16 in Europe. That will be a real challenge for us. Potsdam are the champions from last year, we are all excited and hope we can compete with them.

That was unbelievable. In the first half nearly every shot was a goal. I was given good passes from my team-mates, so it was not that difficult to score. But the whole team played well and it was a victory earned by the whole team. We're thrilled we will now play Potsdam and will try our best to have a good first leg.

It was not the match I'd expected. I thought Almaty would try to attack after the first leg result, but they totally did not. They played with six at the back and made it very difficult for us to get through. But after our opponents tired and lost concentration it was easier for us to score. I think we had a very good second half, especially Inka Grings who scored four times and never stopped looking for another. Now we are all very happy we managed to get through and we are looking forward to playing against an attractive team. The preparation starts today.
