Only two teams go into a tight set of UEFA Women's Champions League round of 16 returns with home leads when the second legs are played on Wednesday and Thursday. A place in the draw for the remainder of the competition on 27 November is the prize.
Holders Olympique Lyonnais are the one side pretty much certain of progress, starting their Wednesday tie at Stade de Gerland with FK Zorkiy Krasnogorsk 4-0 up. The next day, Russia's other representatives, FC Rossiyanka, welcome AC Sparta Praha one goal to the good. Only two other ties have teams clearly in the driving seat: VfL Wolfsburg and ASD Torres CF respectively visiting Røa IL and CFF Olimpia Cluj 4-1 up. Wolfsburg go into the game in fine form having beaten Bayer 04 Leverkusen 7-0 on Sunday – they are yet to concede a goal in the Frauen Bundesliga.
In the meeting of the former champions, 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam struck a late away goal at Arsenal LFC on Thursday and are therefore 2-1 up going into the home return. That match is on Wednesday, when both Swedish sides will also hope to progress as Göteborg FC host 2003 runners-up Fortuna Hjørring level at 1-1 and WFC Malmö, who lost their Damallsvenskan title in the dying minutes of the season on Saturday, travel to ASD CF Verona holding a 1-0 lead.
The next day, FCF Juvisy Essonne and Stabæk FK meet in France after a goalless first leg in Norway. Stabæk go into the game having had their Norwegian title hopes dashed on Sunday when Lillestrøm SK clinched the championship with a game to spare to book their nation's sole guaranteed European slot for next season.
Also at stake this week is some competition history as in the first legs both Malmö's Anja Mittag and Wolfsburg's Conny Pohlers scored their 39th UEFA women's club goal to equal Hanna Ljungberg's long-standing record. Pohlers has the first chance to get to 40 as Wolfsburg's game kicks off earlier than Malmö's on Wednesday.
