Wolfsburg win maiden German Women's Cup

UEFA Women's Champions League finalists VfL Wolfsburg remain in the hunt for a historic treble after defeating 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 3-2 to clinch their first German Women's Cup.

VfL Wolfsburg overcame 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 3-2 in the final of the German Women's Cup to keep their hopes of a historic treble alive.

Ralf Kellermann's team, who clinched their maiden domestic honour by ending Potsdam's four-year reign as league champions last week, inflicted more misery on their opponents when Martina Müller took receipt of Conny Pohlers' back-heel and finished unerringly on the stroke of half-time.

Germany striker Müller doubled her tally seven minutes after the restart and the UEFA Women's Champions League finalists had one hand on the cup when Pohlers made it three. Playing in front of a 14,000-strong crowd in Cologne, Potsdam dug deep, however, and a Lisa Evans effort on the hour mark revived their spirits.

Without a German Women's Cup triumph since their three straight showpiece defeats of 1. FFC Frankfurt between 2004 and 2006, Potsdam nonetheless had reason to believe when Yuki Ogimi scored from the spot to set up a thrilling finale. In spite of the pressure, Wolfsburg rode out the storm and will head into Thursday's UEFA Women's Champions League showpiece against Olympique Lyonnais brimming with confidence.

"This is just fantastic," said goalkeeper Jana Burmeister. "It's great to win a second title in the space of seven days. If we keep on playing like this there is no reason why we can't claim a third title on Thursday – at least, we hope so."
