A strong first-half display was the foundation for Olympique Lyonnais' second successive UEFA Women's Champions League title with a victory against 1. FFC Frankfurt in front of more than 50,000 spectators at Munich's Olympiastadion. Ominously for the rest of Europe, goalscorers Eugénie Le Sommer, who opened the scoring with a penalty, and Camille Abily, scorer of a fine long-range second and the player of the match, have already turned their attentions to next season's competition.
Camille Abily, Lyon's second goalscorer and player of the match
[The difference between the teams] was efficiency. We were facing a very strong Frankfurt side. We scored first, and it hurt their morale. At 2-0 at half time, we tried to control the game. But we were facing a very strong side. [For the goal] I saw the ball coming back and I tried my luck. I knew that the keeper was a bit out of her goal, and it went in. I was happy especially for the team, because 2-0 is better than 1-0.
I was a bit surprised [to be chosen as player of the match], because many girls played a great game, like Shirley Cruz [Traña] in midfield, or Sarah [Bouhaddi] in goal. Everyone played well. It's nice [to get the award], but the most important thing is the trophy for the whole team.
This is fantastic. This was our objective; we won the French Cup on Sunday, and we won tonight. It's only positive, and we will enjoy it fully. In France there's a saying: 'After 2 comes 3'. So I hope that next year we will do it again.
Eugénie Le Sommer, Lyon's first goalscorer
It was a difficult game but scoring twice in the first half made it easier for us. The most important thing tonight was to win, and win our second title. We are really happy, and we're still in the race for the treble, so it's great. [For the penalty] I felt all the Germans fans in the stadium, but I tried not to think about it, and it worked out. Good thing for me. We knew what we were capable of, but to win two finals in a row, last year and this year, that is a great satisfaction. I hope next year we will be there again.
Sonia Bompastor, Lyon captain
We didn't start well, but then we managed to start playing and scored those two goals in the first half. That did us a lot of good, especially the penalty. In the second half we were strong and didn't concede. It was a great performance in this historic stadium. We knew that Marseille won [the 1993 European Champion Clubs' Cup] here, so for us French people, it's a great reference. It was our second final in a row against a German team that had a lot of support and it's a great win.
There's a lot of joy and happiness. We have worked the whole season to win trophies like this, and when you reach your goals it's great. It's a relief as well. With such a final comes a little pressure, but we try to turn it into positive pressure. Tonight we want to party and enjoy it, because these are unforgettable moments in your career. It's the culmination of a lot of work. We wanted to confirm we were the best team in Europe and we proved it again tonight. It's our third consecutive final; we've won the last two. You can't dispute that Olympique Lyonnais are the best team in Europe.
