Kelly Smith's hat-trick gave Arsenal LFC a thrilling success at 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and VfL Wolfsburg's Conny Pohlers became the first player to score 40 UEFA women's club competition goals as five round of 16 ties concluded with holders Olympique Lyonnais and Swedish duo Göteborg FC and WFC Malmö going through to the quarter-finals.

The three remaining places in the 27 November draw will be filled on Thursday with the eventual prize a place in the 23 May UEFA Women's Champions League final in London, staged at Stamford Bridge.

1. FFC Turbine Potsdam 3-4 Arsenal LFC (agg: 4-6)
The first meeting of two former champions at this stage produced an occasion to match. Having conceded a late away goal last week Arsenal's lead looked slim and Potsdam attacked hard but by the break in Germany the Gunners were 2-0 up on the night, Smith set up first by Gemma Davison then by Alex Scott.

That advantage disappeared thanks to Antonia Göransson and Keelin Winters within ten minutes of the restart. Smith immediately completed her hat-trick but Göransson made it three goals in a four-minute spell to get Potsdam back to within two of victory. However Ellen White, a first-half substitute for Rachel Yankey, hit the post and then with nine minutes left was sent clear by Smith to ensure Arsenal's progress to their 11th quarter-final in as many entries, with Potsdam falling before the last eight for the first time.

Arsenal manager Laura Harvey said: "We played well in the first half and took our chances, and the second half was the most emotional half of football I've ever seen. We were always a threat when we went forward. I'm really happy about the attacking play. That was the hardest game for us this season. We don't have such hard tests in England. Today we had to try harder than we've ever done in the domestic competition."

Røa IL 1-1 VfL Wolfsburg (agg: 2-5)
Although Wolfsburg were in control from the off in Norway, Røa gave themselves hope on 31 minutes when Marthe Johansen's perfectly placed shot from the edge of the box eluded Alisa Vetterlein. However, with Pohlers and Martina Müller up front, the German debutants were a constant menace. And barely two minutes after the opener, Pohlers notched her historic 40th European club goal. Wolfsburg could have won the tie by more, especially when Lena Goessling put a penalty wide.

ASD CF Verona 0-2 WFC Malmö (agg: 0-3)
Having lost their Swedish title to Tyresö FF with a dramatic 1-0 home defeat on Saturday, Malmö bounced back to see off their Italian opposition. Only 1-0 down at kick-off, Verona began well and Cristiana Girelli twice threatened early on. But Malmö's advantage was doubled 13 minutes in when Sara Bjork Gunnarsdóttir headed in Lina Nilsson's cross. Malmö started to take control and Emma Wilhelmsson settled matters with a 57th-minute header after a corner.

Göteborg FC 3-2 Fortuna Hjørring (agg: 4-3)
Göteborg began much the brighter and got an immediate reward when Christen Press ran onto a long ball, bamboozled her marker and looped a shot past Fortuna's teenage goalkeeper Maria Christensen. The Danish visitors started to counter yet were caught on the break 27 minutes in when Press sent Olivia Schough clear to make it two. Christensen then did well to deny Press and Fortuna's pressure paid dividends late in the half when Janni Arnth pounced after a corner.

The second period was much tighter though Fortuna struggled to create openings and with 18 minutes left Press struck again. Sofie Pedersen's header then put Fortuna back in the tie and in the last minute the defender was denied by Kristin Hammarström, who also saved from substitutes Camilla Larsen and Kristine Pedersen in a tense finish to take the hosts past Fortuna at this stage for the second year running.

Olympique Lyonnais 2-0 FK Zorkiy Krasnogorsk (agg: 11-0)
With the Russian visitors' campaign effectively over after last week's 9-0 home loss to the holders, Lyon took the chance to rest players with key league games coming up and 19-year-old Tunisian midfielder Amel Majri, who had scored in both legs of the round of 32 defeat of PK-35 Vantaa, took another opportunity to shine with an inspirational performance. Laëtitia Tonazzi scored after two minutes and Sonia Bompastor added another late in the first half as Lyon continued their bid for a third straight title.

Thursday ties (first-leg scores)
FC Rossiyanka 1-0 AC Sparta Praha
FCF Juvisy Essonne 0-0 Stabæk FK
CFF Olimpia Cluj 1-4 ASD Torres CF
