Mixed feelings for Juvisy's Machart

Despite experiencing "great joy" after sealing a first-leg win for FCF Juvisy Essonne, Julie Machart felt her side "could have scored two, three or four" against last-eight rivals Göteborg FC.

FCF Juvisy Essonne forward Julie Machart was left torn between delight and frustration after her sublime goal against Göteborg FC secured the narrowest of leads for the French club at the halfway stage of their UEFA Women's Champions League quarter-final.

"We could have scored two, three or four and we missed a penalty," lamented the 23-year-old after the 1-0 win, in which Gaëtane Thiney was denied from the spot. The tie remains desperately close as a result, and Göteborg captain Stina Segerström pronounced herself "really proud" of her side's efforts.

It was a great joy to score because I hadn't scored in the Champions League this season. It's a relief for me and the whole team. We were determined to score early and we felt a freedom in the first half, but we suffered in the second as they were looking to get forward very quickly due to the fact they were losing. I think we put in a good performance overall, though.

We knew we might be better than them in terms of technique and, with the speed we have on the wings, we knew we could be dangerous. On my flank, in particular, we knew their No19 [Marlene Sjöberg] is slow, so we made the most of their weaknesses. However, it's true that we had our own weaknesses as well and we'll have to work on that.

We could have scored two, three or four and we missed a penalty. We also could have conceded as well and the scoreline could be 1-1 or worse, but we were able to hold out defensively and that's another big positive to take from the game.

Göteborg have quality individual players up front, but luckily for us it wasn't quite working out for them as a team. It will be completely different at their place in the second leg. Our togetherness is one of our strengths and we'll give everything over there.

Janice Cayman, Juvisy forward
To win 1-0 isn't bad, but we had chances to score two or three goals, so that stings a bit. Missed penalties are a part of the game and it was a good save by their goalkeeper, but it's true that you always worry it will end up costing you when you miss a penalty. At the same time, we didn't concede a goal and that's important as well.

When we go there, we'll need to do what we can to keep a clean sheet and score a goal ourselves. We'll need to play the way we did today. We didn't play badly at all; it's just that in the second half it was more difficult for us. We'll need to focus on our qualities and go there to win.

Göteborg have some very strong players of international quality. They played better in the second half than the first. We have good players as well, though, and we can match them. It's an even contest, as you'd expect in a Champions League quarter-final.

Stina Segerström, Göteborg defender
It would have been better if we'd won, but it's not a terrible result. Football always comes down to small, marginal [details]. They were better in the first half and we were better in the last 25 minutes. It's a fair result, but I think we should have got a goal. Still, we were lucky that [Gaëtane Thiney] didn't take the rebound from the penalty. We were getting better and better in the game as it went on and I'm really proud of the team. We played really well.

Cathrine Dyngvold, Göteborg forward
It could have been worse, but I think it's OK because we can win at home. We decided at half-time that we were going to come out and create more pressure, and I think we did a great job – I think we deserved a goal.

Juvisy are a very good team with good players, but we can take them in the second leg. We will press them harder in and I see us scoring and winning. I hope our artificial pitch will give us an advantage. This pitch was very hard to play on as it was very wet and heavy.
