Goalkeeper Schult goes to Wolfsburg

VfL Wolfsburg have begun preparations for their UEFA Women's Champions League defence by signing Germany keeper Almuth Schult from SC 07 Bad Neuenahr on a two-year deal.

VfL Wolfsburg have begun preparations for their UEFA Women's Champions League title defence by signing Germany goalkeeper Almuth Schult.

Schult, set to be Nadine Angerer's understudy in the German team at UEFA Women's EURO 2013, joins the domestic double winners from SC 07 Bad Neuenahr on a two-year contract. The 22-year-old, previously with Hamburger SV and Magdeburger FFC, helped Germany lift the 2010 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup on home soil.

After completing her move to the side that beat Olympique Lyonnais 1-0 at Stamford Bridge last week to claim the European crown in their debut campaign, Schult said: "It is something special to move to the reigning champions, cup winners and Champions League winners.

"It is a big challenge which I am looking forward to very much and which I hope I will be able to live up to. At Wolfsburg they work very professionally, on a very high level. I am getting the best conditions to further develop. Playing in an international competition and of course having the chance to win a title is very appealing to me."

Wolfsburg coach Ralf Kellerman said: "If you have the opportunity to sign Germany's No2 goalkeeper, you should seize it. Almuth has proven her qualities in impressive fashion both in the Bundesliga and in the national team. With her we have more depth in the goalkeeping position. That is why we are happy this move has worked out."
