Lyon champions again, Wolfsburg win

Olympique Lyonnais made it eight French titles in a row at the weekend as UEFA Women's Champions League winners VfL Wolfsburg had a happy homecoming but Arsenal LFC manager Shelley Kerr opted to bow out.

Lyon, whose run of four consecutive European finals was ended in the round of 16 this season, booked a UEFA return a week ago by making sure of a top-two French finish. They wrapped up the championship with a game to spare on Saturday as they prevailed 5-1 at EA Guingamp. Coach Patrice Lair, set to depart after facing Paris Saint-Germain in the cup final on 6 June, said: "It's wonderful for the club. It's a dream come true. I am very emotional and proud, now we must try to win the cup too. We're really enjoying ourselves this season."

Paris themselves are set to join Lyon in Europe next season after a 2-2 draw at third-placed FCF Juvisy Essonne. Juvisy are a point behind Paris, who are at home to relegated Yzeure Allier Auvergne FF on Sunday.

Wolfsburg retained the UEFA Women's Champions League on Thursday by defeating Tyresö FF 4-3 in Lisbon; three days later they moved up to second in Germany with a 4-0 defeat of SGS Essen while 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam were held 2-2 by lowly BV Cloppenburg. With two games to go, Wolfsburg are a point ahead of Potsdam but one behind unbeaten 1. FFC Frankfurt, who host Turbine and then visit VfL in their last fixtures. To join Wolfsburg in Europe, both Frankfurt and Potsdam need top-two finishes.

Tyresö, who led Wolfsburg 2-0 and 3-2 in the final, overcame their heartbreak to beat Swedish leaders FC Rosengård 2-1 on Sunday, coming from behind with two goals from Christen Press, one of a number of key players now leaving the suburban Stockholm club. "After such a devastating loss in Lisbon we wanted to end on a good note," Press said.

In England's FA Women's Super League, Arsenal LFC are bottom after a 2-0 home loss to Bristol Academy WFC, who will be in Europe next season along with 2013 champions Liverpool LFC. After the game Kerr announced that she would leave Arsenal after Sunday's FA Women's Cup final with Everton LFC, saying: "I've had a fantastic 16 months with Arsenal, but feel this is the right time to step aside."
