Gustavsson leaves Tyresö for US return

Tony Gustavsson has announced he is to leave his role in charge of UEFA Women's Champions League runners-up Tyresö FF to assist new United States coach Jill Ellis.

Tony Gustavsson, who coached Tyresö FF to the UEFA Women's Champions League final, is to leave the Swedish club to assist new United States manager Jill Ellis.

Gustavsson, 40, was previously assistant coach to fellow Swede Pia Sundhage with the US team in 2012, when they won Olympic gold, before taking over at Tyresö. There he won the Damallsvenskan and made last week's European final, losing to VfL Wolfsburg, but he has now opted to return to the US under new coach Ellis as they aim for the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup in Canada.

"I'm really looking forward to being back with the US team again," said Gustavsson. "I have great respect for these players, their work ethic and their desire to keep progressing as individuals and as a team. I'm excited to contribute to that process through any role Jill asks of me."

Ellis added: "Tony will be an excellent addition to our coaching staff. We have worked together before and I am delighted to have him come on board as we move toward Women's World Cup qualifying. He brings tremendous international experience and a fantastic energy to our programme. I am excited to have him join us in a couple of weeks."

Last week Gustavsson fielded US players Christen Press, Whitney Engen and Meghan Klingenberg in Lisbon, having previously also had Ali Krieger and Ashlyn Harris in his squad. Tyresö finished second in the 2013 Damallsvenskan to book a 2014/15 European place but much of their squad is leaving due to financial problems.
