German champions 1. FFC Frankfurt have made another signing ahead of their European return in the shape of Wales midfielder Jessica Fishlock while UEFA Women's Champions League holders have haded Alexandra Popp and Luisa Wensing new contracts.
The 27-year-old Fishlock will arrive from Seattle Reign FC after the NWSL play-offs in the United States, her club having topped the regular season table. In the last 12 months Fishlock has won league titles on loan at Glasgow City FC and Melbourne Victory. According to Seattle she will return to the club "in time for the 2015 NWSL season".
Fischlock, capped 80 times by Wales, has previously played for Cardiff City LFC, Bristol Academy WFC and AZ Alkmaar. She said: "I am very happy to play the 2014/15 season for 1. FFC Frankfurt. It is a club with a high reputation and a long tradition. I feel honoured to embark on this challenge and hope I can contribute to a successful season."
Frankfurt coach Colin Bell, whose team enter the UEFA Women’s Champions League in the round of 32 aiming to build on their record tally of three victories, had previously recruited Kerstin Garefrekes, Kathrin Hendrich, Mandy Islacker and Marith Priessen to replace a host of departing players including Fatmire Alushi, Melanie Behringer and Babett Peter.
"Jessica is very experienced and has developed into a key player for Seattle Reign over recent years," Bell said. "She is technically strong and is an aggressive midfielder who pushes the right buttons in build-up play. Her personality and winning mentality make her a perfect fit for our job requirements."
Wolfsburg, pipped to the German title last season by Frankfurt but going for a third European crown in a row, will do so with both Popp and Wensing. Germany forward Popp has agreed a 12-month contract extension until summer 2016 and said: "In the past season od I was spared injuries, thank Hod. Scoring important goals on top of that is outstanding and was a further boost to my confidence."
Wensing, meanwhile, as added two seasons to her deal, which now expires in 2017. Like Popp, Wensing arrived in summer 2012 from FCR 2001 Duisburg and said: "I have settled in really well here and feel happy in Wolfsburg. We have great conditions here at VfL. I am part of a superb team and can develop further at this club."
