Germany striker Sandra Smisek will miss 1. FFC Frankfurt's UEFA Women's Cup quarter-final against WFC Rossiyanka after tearing sinews in her left thumb in a freak accident.

Six-week absence
The 30-year-old, who last month helped Germany retain the FIFA Women's World Cup, suffered the injury trying to catch a falling glass on Friday and the club estimate that she will be out for at least six weeks – with the two last-eight legs against the Russian side on 15 and 21 November. Smisek was already out of Thursday's UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualifier between Germany and the Netherlands due to work commitments with the police.

'Serious blow'
Frankfurt general manager Siegfried Dietrich said: "Given our many commitments in the coming weeks in the league, the German Cup and the UEFA Cup, the Smisek injury is a serious blow to our coach Dr. Hans-Jürgen Tritschoks. We wish Smi a speedy recovery." His club return to Frauen Bundesliga action on Sunday with a home game against SC Freiburg having won all three fixtures to date.
