Holders VfL Wolfsburg earned a deserved draw in their all-German UEFA Women's Champions League semi-final first leg against 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam.

The visitors created the clearer of the chances in both halves but could not find a potentially crucial away goal, something which could come back to haunt them in eight days' time when the sides meet again at the VfL-Stadion. Bernd Schröder's Potsdam were not without threat themselves, and the Women's Bundesliga leaders will feel confident of finding the net in the return as they target a third continental title.

Opportunities were scarce for either team in the opening exchanges. The home side were first to hit the target only for Almuth Schult to keep out Pauline Bremer's volley seven minutes in, before Julia Simic whistled another warning shot wide for Potsdam.

As the half progressed, however, Wolfsburg found their footing. Home keeper Ann-Katrin Berger was busy as she first smartly parried Martina Müller's shot, before denying captain Nadine Kessler seconds later. Nilla Fischer then sent a header close and Alexandra Popp promptly drove just wide as the visitors piled on the pressure.

Popp looked as though she would break the deadlock before the half-time whistle, surging on to a perfectly-weighted pass from Kessler and sliding a shot the wrong side of the upright.

Potsdam did not retreat into their shell, though, and Luisa Wensing was forced to clear Ada Hegerberg's header off the Wolfsburg line moments before the interval. Ralf Kellermann's Wolfsburg reapplied the pressure after the restart and Verena Faisst's goal-bound shot was superbly blocked by Bremer.

Kellermann sent on the competition's all-time top-scorer Conny Pohlers to try and snatch a goal in the final 20 minutes as chances continued to come for both teams. Simic and Potsdam substitute Antonia Göransson were just off target, while Berger needed to be at full stretch to stop Kessler's long-range drive in added time and ensure the tie stayed all square heading into the second leg.
