Italy cruise past Romania again

Romania 1-6 Italy
Italy boosted their hopes of reaching the play-off from qualifying Group 2 with another resounding victory against Romania.

Italy boosted their hopes of reaching the play-offs and even have a mathematical chance of topping UEFA EURO WOMEN'S 2009™ qualifying Group 2 with another resounding victory against Romania that moved them level on points with leaders Sweden though adrift on head-to-head record.

Gabbiadini opener
Italy, who won the reverse fixture 5-0, opened the scoring in Buftea in the 13th minute when Melania Gabbiadini received the ball and ran into the right channel before releasing a shot that cannoned in off the right post. In the 26th minute, Patrizia Panico made it 2-0 in similar circumstances with her effort coming after some build-up through the centre. Romania did not lose heart though and Florentina Spanu scored with a wonderful header to give them belief that a draw could be there for the taking.

Second-half surge
But Italy proved too strong and, in the 40th minute, Tatiana Zorri scored from the penalty spot to make it 3-1. After the break Pamela Conti , who came on as a substitute at half-time, Gabbiadini and substitute Silvia Fuselli confirmed their dominance to leave them with 15 points from seven games. Italy have a home game with Hungary remaining while Sweden have three matches still to play.
