Iceland open in promising fashion

Greece 0-3 Iceland Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir, Ásthildur Helgadóttir and Greta Mjöll Samúelsdóttir scored as Iceland started their campaign with a win.

Iceland's bid to qualify for UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ began with a comfortable Group 3 win in Greece.

Vidarsdóttir penalty
Having lost their opener 6-0 in France, Greece had another tough test today against a nation that only missed out on the 2005 finals in a play-off with Norway - a positive sign with four extra teams to qualify this time around. And the prolific Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir got Iceland off to a fine start when she converted an eight-minute penalty.

Victory sealed
Ásthildur Helgadóttir doubled the lead six minutes later and substitute Greta Mjöll Samúelsdóttir claimed the third in added time. Iceland have the chance to go top of the group when they welcome leaders France on 16 June and then meet Serbia five days later. Greece’s next qualifier is in Serbia on 25 August.
