Slovenia reignited their play-off hopes with a third win in four UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ qualification Group 3 matches.
Return to form
Tanja Lekic's side started the pool in the worst possible fashion with a 5-0 defeat by Serbia and a six-goal reverse against runaway group leaders France. But they have now given themselves a chance of featuring in one of the five two-legged play-offs with their latest victory as they now lead Greece and Slovenia by three points, with four of the six third-placed teams to earn a two-legged tie along with the runners-up.
Early concession
Greece took an early lead but that was as good as it got for the visitors in Dravograd as Slovenia gradually assumed control. They levelled after 36 minutes through defender Manja Benak, and were in front three minutes later thanks to Mateja Zver. Natasa Petrovic added a third after the break to confirm victory for the hosts. Slovenia have two matches left, against Iceland, three points ahead in second, next month and the return in Greece in October. Greece will hope to have beaten Serbia earlier that week and still be within three points of Slovenia to have a chance of overtaking them with a better win that their defeat today.
