Vidarsdóttir keeps Iceland going

Iceland moved a step closer to UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ as a Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir hat-trick inspired a comfortable win against Slovenia.

Hat-trick
A 2-1 defeat in Slovenia was the only game in which Iceland had dropped Group 3 points before today and Vidarsdóttir ensured there would be no repeat. She converted an eleventh minute penalty she won hereself and add further goals on 26 and 50 minutes to take her qualifying tally to nine, a total matched only by Denmark's Merete Pedersen. Vidarsdóttir was then replaced but captain Katrín Jónsdóttir added another on 62 minutes and Katrín Ómarsdóttir sealed the victory late on to delight nearly 4,000 noisy fans.

France showdown
The result leaves Iceland just three points adrift of leaders France. If they win their game in hand at home to Greece on Thursday they will overtake Les Bleues on head-to-head record and need only a draw in their trip to France on 27 September to qualify for the finals in Finland without recourse to the play-offs, though whatever the result against Greece, Iceland know a win in their concluding match will be good enough. Slovenia are hoping to earn a two-legged tie in October themselves, and a victory or even a point in their remaining match in Greece on 2 October could well take them into the play-offs as one of the four best third-placed teams in the six groups.
