Iceland defeated Greece 7-0 to gain the edge on France in UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2009™ Group 3 qualifying with one game to go.
The home side were on their way to comfortable victory as early as the fourth minute when Sara Björk Gunnarsdóttir opened the scoring. Hólmfrídur Magnúsdóttir doubled the lead soon after and scored again ten minutes after half-time. In between, Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir scored on the half-hour mark to take the outright lead as the qualifying competition's top goalscorer and then added another – her eleventh of the campaign – midway through the second period, two minutes after Katrín Ómarsdóttir had got her name on the scoresheet.
Iceland and Les Bleues are both on 18 points from seven games played and meet in France on 27 September in the decider. Iceland only require a draw from that encounter to qualify courtesy of their 1-0 home win against their section rivals earlier in the campaign. Whichever team comes second will be automatically entered into the play-offs.
