Last-gasp Hungary down Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland's Alfie Wylie feels his team's hopes of qualifying are over following a last-gasp defeat by Hungary, whose coach László Kiss hopes to "build on this positive result".

Northern Ireland coach Alfie Wylie feels his team's dream of qualifying for UEFA Women's EURO 2013 is over following Wednesday's 1-0 defeat by Hungary.

Northern Ireland had been progressing well in Group 3 but are now five points off second-placed Iceland and six adrift of leaders Belgium. They find themselves in such a situation following a 94th-minute penalty converted by Fanni Vágó at Mourneview Park, earning Hungary only their second win in the section.

"Sadly, we're out of contention now for next summer's finals," said Wylie. "As far as qualification goes, our hopes are gone. It's very disappointing because we would have liked to have kept our hopes alive for as long as possible. I felt the girls deserved a draw, but all credit to Hungary. They came here, got at us and got their win."

László Kiss, meanwhile, reflected on a "big three points against difficult opponents". The Hungary coach added: "It was a late winner and I have to pay tribute to our goalscorer Fanni Vágó. She kept a cool head to convert her penalty. It was an important win for us and hopefully we can build on this positive result for the remainder of the campaign. We have three qualifiers left and I have set the girls a target of six points from nine in our remaining games."
