Goals flow as Switzerland pip Poland

Switzerland are through to the second qualifying round after topping Group 1 with wins against Latvia, Georgia and a Poland side who may yet join them as one of the best runners-up.

Switzerland are through to the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship second qualifying round after a dominant performance in Group 1.

Brigitte Steiner's side scored 32 goals against Latvia and Georgia, but had a decidedly harder task as they completed their 100% record with a 2-1 victory against mini-tournament hosts Poland. Carmen Pulver struck the winner midway through the second half after Joanna Wróblewska had cancelled out Noelle Maritz's fine opener just before the interval.

The victory ensured Switzerland's place in the second qualifying round and Poland may yet join them in the draw on 15 November as one of the four runners-up with the best record against the teams first and third in their sections across the ten groups. They will be hoping for a positive result between Sweden and Hungary in the Group 3 decider on Saturday to join the Czech Republic, Serbia and Finland in that reckoning.

Switzerland were in the driving seat from the start as Sabrina Ribeaud scored five and Audrey Wuichet four in a 17-1 defeat of Georgia, while Poland overcame Latvia 6-0. Two days later, Switzerland struck 15 without reply, including four from Aline Stöckli, against Latvia, and Magdalena Szaj matched that personal tally in Poland's 12-0 victory against Georgia. Latvia gained some consolation on Thursday as they rounded off their campaign with a 1-0 triumph against Georgia.
