Dutch sail into second stage

The Netherlands are through to the second qualifying round having not dropped a point or conceded a goal in their mini-tournament in Poland.

The Netherlands are through to the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship second qualifying round having not dropped a point or conceded a goal in their mini-tournament in Poland.

Pair take control
Goals either side of half-time by Vanity Lewerissa and Siri Worm gave the Netherlands a 2-0 win against Azerbaijan in Zawiercie on the opening day, when the first qualifying round Group 2 hosts were overcoming Greece 4-0 in Jaworzno, Aleksandra Sikora's hat-trick enhanced by Sylwia Gorbacewicz. Two days later Poland matched that scoreline against Azerbaijan in Zawiercie, as Sikora struck on 12 minutes, Gorbacewicz added two more before the break and her half-time substitute Katarzyna Ilczuk registered nine minutes from the end. The Netherlands, meanwhile, beat Greece 3-0, Worm scoring in the 35th minute and Wendy Mulder claiming two second-half goals in Jaworzno.

Dutch triumphant
So the group came down to today's meeting of Poland and the Netherlands in Zawiercie, with the hosts requiring only a point to ensure a place in December's draw for the next stage. However, two Lisanne Grimberg goals meant the Netherlands triumphed 2-0, and Poland must hope that their record against the teams first and third in the pool will be one among the six best of the eventual ten runners-up in this round. Azerbaijan finished third after beating Greece 2-1.
