Germany fall
UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship holders Germany went ahead six minutes into their meeting with the US in Christchurch, heading in Dzsenifer Marozsan's corner. But the US fought back strongly and deservedly equalised just past the hour when Vicki Di Martino kept up her record of scoring in every game of the first U17 finals and with nine minutes left Courtney Verloo scored the winner from close range. Germany coach Ralf Peter said: "Having won the European Championship, we wanted to win the World Cup. Now this dream has gone but there is still bronze to play for, and we'll fight for that."

England miss out
Their opponents in the third-place play-off on Sunday will be England, who lost 1-0 against North Korea. The only one of the semi-finalists not to have won the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, England were two down at the break through goals from Ho Un-Byol and Jon Myong-Hwa and although Rebecca Jane pulled one back with 16 minutes left, North Korea held on. England coach Lois Fidler said: "Our girls deserved to get more out of the game. I'm very proud of them: they were resilient and showed great character again. We've had a lot of criticism here for coming out on top in games when we've not been the better side, but on this occasion I think it was the other way round."
