Germany will begin their bid to make it a hat-trick of victories from the inaugural three editions of the UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship when they kick off their 2009/10 bid on 4 September in a first qualifying round group containing the only other side to have made both previous final tournaments, France.

German defence
A 7-0 win against Spain today ensured Germany retained the title they won in 2007/08 with a defeat of France, who finished third this time around. When the 2009/10 first qualifying round draw was made at the end of last year Germany and France were both placed in Group 7 with hosts Iceland and Israel, and it will be the earliest of the ten mini-tournaments to begin, running from 4 to 9 September.

Malinowski eligible
The holders will have two of the 2008/09 finalist squad eligible next year, Jana Blessing and Kyra Malinowski, who scored five goals against Spain and 12 over the course of the campaign. Meanwhile four of the 18 players France took to Nyon will still be available, Léa Le Garrec, Makan Traoré, Charlotte Fernandes and goalkeeper Camille Desforges. They may need that experience as only the ten group winners will be assured of progress to the second qualifying round draw on at 10.30CET on 11 November along with the six runners-up with the best record against the teams first and third in their pool

Nyon finals
Four teams will eventually qualify from those mini-tournaments in the spring for the final tournament, which as for the previous two editions will be held at the Colovray Stadium in Nyon, opposite UEFA's Swiss headuqarters, next summer. The tournament will act as qualifier for the 2nd FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.
