Lloyd Hughes excited by Wales' finals chance

Trefor Lloyd Hughes, FAW president, talks to UEFA.com about building for the future, the burgeoning women's game and Wales hosting their first UEFA final tournament in 100 days.

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) will explore uncharted territory in 100 days' time when Carmarthenshire stages the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship, and president Trefor Lloyd Hughes says the anticipation is palpable.

"This is the first time ever that Wales is hosting such an event, so it is a big, big plus for us," he told UEFA.com. "It is big for the development of women's football all over the UK and Europe, but in particular in Wales, where we are very, very keen on developing."

To that end, the FAW created its Premier Women's Football League four years ago and Lloyd Hughes says he is noticing a real upward trend in terms of awareness and participation in the women's game in the country. "It has already built up the last 12 months or so," he added. "Recently I was in a local club and there was almost as many young girls and women playing football as there was men. We're glad to see that."

The overall picture is a happy one too. Wales will hold the UEFA Super Cup in 2014 and opened a national development centre in Newport earlier this year, Dragon Park. In time, Lloyd Hughes would like to see the creation of another near his home in the north of the country, but for now he is focused on the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship between 19 and 31 August.
