New Women's U19 Championship trophy revealed

Whichever team wins the 2014 final tournament in Norway will have to put a bit more effort into the trophy lift after a bigger, better piece of silverware was unveiled.

The ambition for the eight teams that reach next summer's UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship will be unchanged but the prize will be different after a new trophy was unveiled in Nyon on Wednesday.

For the past 12 years the old crown has been lifted, half-dropped, held and kissed by players and coaches from Germany, France, Spain, Russia, Italy, England and Sweden. It was perhaps beginning to show its age so it is out with the old, in with the new: whoever triumphs in Norway in 2014 will collect a trophy bigger and better than ever.

Designed by Fivefootsix, the London-based company behind the UEFA Youth League silverware, the trophy measures 50cm in height and features two arms extending up to a ball from a base engraved with the competition logo. It is silver, aligning it with UEFA's other women's competitions; its predecessor was gold, with a transparent green ball.

The old trophy is gone but will not be forgotten in its permanent home on display at UEFA headquarters – especially by the select group who have got their hands on it. Jarl Torske, coach of 2014 hosts Norway, is not among that number after losing three WU19 finals over the years, yet will hope the new silverware brings him better luck.

Having outlived the original prize, he and Mo Marley – whose England side learned their elite round draw fate in Nyon on Wednesday – are the last survivors from the inaugural 2001/02 season.
