Matheis targeting win to take Germany through

Germany's destiny is now in their hands. Victory over Spain on Tuesday will book a place in the WU19 EURO semi-finals and with it a FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup spot, and a draw would be enough provided England beat Norway elsewhere. UEFA.com spoke to Frankfurt midfielder Saskia Matheis ahead of the Group B crunch match.

UEFA.com: How will you approach the game?

Saskia Matheis: We have to win. It's in our hands now and that suits us. We want to be in control, and it's up to us now. We know what we have to do, we have a plan; we want to try our best, to do everything to win the next game.

UEFA.com: What are you expecting from Spain?

Saskia Matheis: Our tactics are quite open, we know we have to react well. We will do anything necessary to win. Spain are very technical and difficult to beat, and they're also extremely confident. If we give 100% or more we can win. They are confident, but so are we.

UEFA.com: You could even stop Spain if you were to win 7-0 ...

Saskia Matheis: I know, but we are not looking at that. We don't care if we win by one or two goals, we just have to win. We know where Spain's weaknesses are.

UEFA.com: What's the mood like in the German camp?

Saskia Matheis: After the Norway game we were a little bit down, but we analysed it and saw we played well – it wasn't because we played badly that we lost. That helped restore confidence to the same level as before, and we're looking ahead positively.

UEFA.com: Are you well prepared?

Saskia Matheis: We know we can win and earn a place in the semi-final. It's been very relaxed and calm around the team; we know what we need to do and just need to stay positive and calm. There is some anticipation ahead of the next game and it's quite exciting. We just want to play.
