Group 5 review: Scotland will make their debut in Hungary after finishing their campaign in style.
Article body
Scotland will make their debut at the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship in Hungary in July after securing first place in Group 5.
Comfortable victory
Tony Gervaise's side went into this afternoon's encounter with Israel knowing that a point would be enough for the team to top the section following victories against Belgium and mini-tournament hosts Portugal. But settling for a point never really seemed on Scotland's mind as they eased to a comfortable 4-1 win in Amadora.
Thomson form
Portugal win
The three points mean that the Scots qualify with a 100 per cent record, having scored nine goals and conceded just one, and rendered Portugal's 1-0 win against Belgium in the day's other game largely inconsequential. Portugal nevertheless had a point to prove in front of their home support in Lisbon after a disappointing campaign.
Galvão goal
Sofia Galvão scored the only goal of a hard-fought game on the half-hour mark, rifling in a free-kick. Belgium pushed hard for an equaliser as they tried to end their own disappointing qualifying campaign on a high but found Portuguese goalkeeper Martins Duarte in superb form.
Belgium bottom
The win meant that Portugal finished second, three points behind Scotland. Israel finish third courtesy of their 2-1 victory against bottom-side Belgium on Friday.
