Belarussian first
For the first time in any UEFA competition, the finals will be held in F.Y.R. Macedonia in the earlier time slot of 24 May until 5 June 2010. But before that, 44 of the 45 qualifying contenders must get past the first stage from 19 to 24 September 2009, with the top two in each group to progress to the second qualifying round from 27 March to 1 April 2010 along with the third-placed side with the best record against the leading pair in their pool and five-time champions Germany, who have been given a bye. Italy, who took the title in 2008, take on Scotland, Northern Ireland and Bulgaria while Belarus, hosts for the 2009 finals, begin their subsequent campaign by playing England, Norway and Slovakia.
