Five-star Germany back with a bang

Germany 5-0 Norway
Pauline Bremer, 17, scored a hat-trick and Linda Dallmann two – all in the first half – as Germany returned to the final tournament in style.

Germany returned to the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship with a bang with five unanswered first-half goals against Norway.

Last year's tournament was the first in the competition's history without Germany, and Maren Meinert's team looked eager to make up for lost time. They led 3-0 inside 21 minutes and were five up at half-time as Pauline Bremer's hat-trick and two Linda Dallmann goals put Norway and their high defensive line to the sword. Germany eased off in the second period, and their opponents improved; but the damage had been done.

For Norway it was all sadly familiar – in Germany's last finals appearance, the 2011 showpiece, they beat Jarl Torske's tiring charges 8-1. This opening-day fixture could not be put down to fatigue, however: just irresistible German forward play. They were 2-0 up inside 15 minutes, Dallmann side-footing in a right-wing cross before applying a towering header to one from the left. Bremer soon made it three.

There was some relief for Norway after Guro Bergsvand brought down Bremer, Lina Magull blasting the penalty high over the bar – the respite did not last long. Six minutes from the break Dallmann selflessly squared for Bremer to make it 4-0 and the refuge of half-time had still not arrived when the two combined again as Bremer, 17, completed her hat-trick. Never mind 8-1, for a while the finals record 9-0 scoreline was under threat.

Yet it was never entirely one-way traffic. Norway were always a threat on the counterattack and only the crossbar denied Vilde Bøe Risa soon after the restart. Norway dropped deeper and Bremer, Dallmann and Magull were withdrawn as Germany looked ahead to Group B tasks ahead – they meet holders Sweden on Thursday, when Torske's team seek to get back on track against Finland. Things evened out but the scoreline remained decidedly one-sided.
