Introduction

The final tournament of the 2012/13 competition was the first to be staged in Wales, where the 15 matches were played at four venues – Carmarthen, Haverfordwest and two in Llanelli – from 19 to 31 August 2013. The final round also acted as a qualifying event for the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup to be held in Canada, with England, Finland, France and Germany claiming Europe's four places by reaching the semi-finals.

In playing terms, the texture of the tournament varied considerably in comparison with the 2012 finals in Turkey, which had featured Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Spain and Turkey. In 2013, the geographical centre of gravity shifted northwards, with the championship in south-west Wales being disputed by four Nordic countries, plus France, Germany, England and the host nation. Attendances, although low, set new benchmarks for women's football in Wales, with the 1,030 crowd for the final between France and England at the Parc y Scarlets stadium in Llanelli bringing the tournament total to 7,798.
