Hosts China deny Denmark

China 3-2 Denmark The FIFA Women's World Cup hosts started their campaign with a dramatic late victory after losing a two-goal lead in Wuhan.

Tournament hosts China started the FIFA Women's World Cup with a dramatic 3-2 victory after Denmark had battled back from two goals down in Wuhan.

Remarkable win
China had taken the lead after 31 minutes when Li Jie flighted a free-kick into the top corner leaving Denmark goalkeeper Heidi Johansen no chance. They took a two-goal lead after half-time with a deflected Bi Yan shot, but Denmark hit back straight away through an Anne Dot Eggers Nielsen header. With three minutes left, Cathrine Paaske Sørensen grabbed an equaliser only for China to retake the lead immediately following Song Xiaoli's stunning half-volley.

Brazil next
Brazil opened their campaign with a comprehensive 5-0 defeat of New Zealand in the day's other game in Group D. Two goals by Umeå IK striker Marta plus one each from Daniela, VfL Wolfsburg's Cristiane and Renata Costa secured the win in Wuhan as well as Brazil's second highest victory in the Women's World Cup. China next play Brazil on Saturday, when Denmark and New Zealand will be looking to pick up their first points.
