Denmark bow out early

Brazil 1-0 Denmark The European nation could not secure the victory necessary for progression to the last eight of the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Denmark missed out on a quarter-final place at the FIFA Women's World Cup after losing 1-0 to Group D winners Brazil in Hangzhou.

Hosts progress
The Nordic side conceded in added time as they pushed for the win they needed to qualify for the knockout stages. The result, coupled with China's 2-0 victory over New Zealand in Tianjin, means Denmark finish third in the section and will head home early while the hosts progress to the last eight for a meeting with Norway on Sunday. At half-time, the European side might have thought a draw good enough for second place with the group's other game also remaining goalless, but second half strikes from China's Li Jie and Xie Caixia meant Denmark had to push for a winner. However, it was Brazil who grabbed the game's only goal through in injury time Pretinha and they will now play Australia following the Matildas' dramatic qualification earlier in the day.
