England fight back for victory

Austria 1-4 England The visitors recovered from going a goal behind to make a perfect start to their qualifying campaign.

Back on terms
The home side took the lead in Amstetten through Natascha Celouch’s exquisite chip in the 21st minute but England were quickly back on terms courtesy of Fara William's penalty, following a foul on Kelly Smith. The No10 then put the visitors in front ten minutes before the break although Bianca Reischer in the Austrian goal will feel she should have done better.

Scrambled fourth
England did not look back after the interval. Amanda Barr made it three in the 52nd minute from Smith's pass before substitute Susan Smith wrapped up a fine performance by scrambling in a fourth goal two minutes into added time. The first-ever meeting between the two sides leaves England top of the embryonic Group 5 table, although much-fancied France have yet to start their campaign.
